Understanding the 90% SERDES Channel Bandwidth Threshold and Performance Margins for GMSL Devices

As channel bandwidth utilization approaches the available limit, it becomes important to carefully verify the bandwidth calculations and design assumptions. Since GMSL traffic is scheduled and prioritized, there is no fixed upper utilization limit that applies to all use cases. A design operating at around 95% utilization can function reliably if all traffic and pixel timing requirements have been accurately accounted for. However, as utilization approaches 98% to 99%, the available margin becomes very small, increasing the risk of packet drops or other performance issues.In most applications, bandwidth utilization remains well below these levels and is not a concern. The 90% threshold indicated in the GMSL Bandwidth Calculator is intended as a warning flag, prompting users to review their calculations and confirm that adequate bandwidth margin exists, preferably with ADI support if needed.
